The BBC has dropped plans to show a fictional terror attack in an episode of Casualty to avoid offending Muslims. The first show of the hospital drama’s new series was to have featured a storyline about an explosion caused by Islamic extremists.
Now the bomb will be set off by animal rights campaigners instead. Now that’s make believe, after all animal rights people have destroyed labs and thrown paint on fur coats. I suppose the only more fictional episode would have been renegade librarians blowing up a campus library over the patriotic act.
A BBC spokesman said: “With any storyline there are lots of ideas that get put forward but don’t make the series.”
This does kind of make sense in TV land, I used to watch Law & Order until every single episode seemed to feature any possible murderer except for a poor minority committing a crime.
I think that it would have been far more sensitive if during the second world war the war movies featured any one but a German or Japanese villain for fear of offending someone.
