Hey, I'm a Canadian who has been living i'm Riyadh, Saudi Arabia for 2 years now &these are my personal observations regarding each of the so-called bans mentioned in this article:

1) Sadly it is true that women aren't allowed to drive in Saudi -however they are aloud to drive in compounds &recently a Saudi princess has taken to driving on the roads regardless while the government is working to pass a law that cancels the ban on female driving.

2) I have seen people walking their dogs and there is a pet shop a block away from where I live.

3) No, birthdays are not banned in Saudi, I can attest to that since we have gone to TGIFs for my brother's birthday and they brought him cake and the waiters sang a very loud happy birthday for him.

4) There are numerous toy shops (including Toys R Us) and all of them contain teddy bears and dolls.

5) I do not know about laws regarding female athletes but I do know that my female friend is in both her school's swimming and soccer team.

6) It is true that red things are banned near Valentine's Day.

7) The statement regarding Jews is false as I researched it myself a while back, however people who hold passports that have evidence of visiting Israel are not allowed in the country due to diplomatic tensions (or non-existant ties).

8) I have no information regarding the bans on the Bible and Pokemon.

9) As far as I can tell the ban on books and movies is void because there are many huge movie rental/sale stores which contain many movies with "sex scenes" and bookstore here such as Jarir hold all the best sellers including romance novels.

Regarding the subject of Islam, Saudi laws are more based on Saudi culture rather than Islamic Shariah. In Islam men & women are equal and FYI Islam is the only religeon to put a limit (4) on the number if women a man can marry while other religeons it's limitless. Actual countries themselves ban polygamy not the religeons. As far as child marriges are concerned those are also Saudi culture not Islam. In Islam you can marry near/at puberty and the girl, the boy, and the parents must agree, even if one of th disagrees the marrige cannot take place. Also in Islam a woman may divorce her husband on any grounds, for example once a woman came to the Prophet (SAW) wanting to divorce her husband because she didn't like his face and this divorce was carried out. A real Islamic societ consists of freedom of religeon as demonstrated after the spread of Islam in the era of the Prophet (SAW) and the Khalifas.

Also camera phones are definately aloud: EVERYONE owns one. Also the abaya is mandatory while the head scarf isn't and the full veil DEFINATELY isn't. Plus there are no clothing/modesty rules in compounds. Finally there are many co-ed schools and the first co-ed universaty is being built.

This is just me sharing some information because there is way too much ignpran and hate. I apologize for anything I might've gotten wrong.

i have lived in the kingdom for three years as an american female. i was only offended once by a saudi and it was a vehicular ticket i did not deserve. the man argued with me and i argued back. i am allowed to wear western clothing and to drive my car on the compound. even though there are certain rights women do not have (yet), recall that it was not until the 1930s that women had voting rights in new zealand and the women's movement in america was not until the early 1970s. it's a sad fact there are a lot of bigots and racists on the planet. those people have their eyes closed. but the beat goes on. the middle east has a huge underground movement with music and mixed-gender mingling. the fanatic and the cops with too much power are losing the battle for change. the kingdom is a lot like america was 200 yrs ago. look at how women and children were treated then and compare it to present times. societies grow up and they change, but some are more forward-thinking than others. you would think that places like saudi arabia and even china would learn (quicker) from the mistakes of other great nations. yes, there are some ridiculous rules in the kingdom, but what place is perfect? america, europe, africa, china and india have some ridiculous rules too! utopia does not exist. we can all learn from each other without being hypocrites and ignoramous idiots.
